Frequently Asked Questions

  • What do I need to prepare before my vasectomy?
Shaving/Trimming: Two nights before your appointment, trim or shave the hair from your pubic area and scrotum. You can use clippers or a sensitive-skin hair removal cream - just be sure to follow the product instructions carefully. What to Wear: On the day of your procedure, wear a pair of firm, supportive underwear. You’ll wear these home afterwards and during your recovery. Medications: If you’re taking regular medications, please refer to the FAQ section for detailed instructions.
  • Should I eat before the vasectomy?
Yes. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so having a proper meal beforehand helps prevent feeling faint.
  • Do I need to stop my medication?
Stop aspirin, anti-inflammatories (ie. ibuprofen), fish oil 1 week before the procedure. For any other blood thinners (ie. warfarin or apixaban, please contact Dr Shaun beforehand).
  • Can I have my consultation and procedure on the same day?
Your consultation will first be done over the phone before your procedure. This is to make sure it’s safe and appropriate for you to proceed and gives you the chance to ask any questions ahead of time. Once that’s complete, your procedure will be scheduled on a separate day.
  • Are there any age restrictions?
There is no legal age limit, but vasectomy is intended to be permanent. It’s usually recommended only for men whose families are complete. Younger men, especially those under 25 or without children, are encouraged to think carefully before proceeding.
  • Will I need sedation?
Sedation is not usually required. A mild sedative tablet can be provided by your GP if you are extremely anxious, but you will need someone to drive you home.
  • What should I bring with me?
Your Medicare card (or the details), a payment card, and wear tight underwear.
  • How long will it take?
A no-scalpel vasectomy usually takes about 20 minutes, but expect to be at the clinic for around 45 minutes.
  • Can my partner be in the room?
Your partner is welcome to attend the consultation but will need to wait outside during the procedure for hygiene and safety reasons.
  • What happens during the vasectomy?
A small opening is made in the skin to reach the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm), which are then cut and sealed. Local anaesthetic is used so you should only feel mild discomfort. See video above for a more detailed explanation.
  • Will it affect my testosterone, sex drive, erections, or ejaculation volume?
No. Vasectomy does not change testosterone levels, sexual performance, or sex drive. The amount of semen stays almost the same, as sperm is only a small part of the fluid.
  • Is the procedure reversible?
Vasectomy should be considered permanent. While surgical reversal is sometimes possible, it is costly and not always successful. If you think you might want children in the future, you should not have a vasectomy.
  • What will I feel like afterwards?
Mild bruising, swelling, or soreness for a few days is common. Supportive underwear helps reduce discomfort. Most people can return to desk work the next day but should avoid heavy lifting for at least three days.
  • Can I drive home after my vasectomy?
Yes, as long as you feel well. Wait at least 20 minutes before leaving and avoid driving if you feel faint.
  • When can I fly after a vasectomy?
It’s best to avoid flying for 48 hours after the procedure.
  • When can I shower?
Keep the area dry on the day of the procedure. You can shower the next morning.
  • When can I have sex again?
You can start ejaculating from 48 hours after the procedure and have sex after 1 week. Continue using contraception until your semen test confirms there is no sperm.
  • When can I return to exercise or sport?
Light exercise can usually start after 5 days. More vigorous activity like gym workouts, cycling, or contact sports should wait at least 1 week, depending on how you feel.
  • What problems should I look out for?
Mild pain, bruising, and small lumps near the tubes are normal in the first couple of days. Contact your doctor if you notice significant swelling, redness, fever, or a large amount of blood in your semen.
  • When do I do the semen test?
The first semen analysis is usually done 3 months after the vasectomy and after at least 25 ejaculations. Continue using contraception until you receive written confirmation that your sample is clear of sperm.
